Why We Instinctively Turn to Nature: Biophilic Design, Heat Stress & Human Wellbeing

23.06.2026

On one of the hottest weeks of the year, we don't debate where to go. Given the opportunity, we head for the shade of the trees. That human stress response is instinctive and continues when we head indoors.

Research shows that tree canopy can reduce air temperatures by up to 8°C in Central European cities. Our nervous systems already know this. We feel it before we understand it.

What's interesting is that the same instinct to seek out nature when we're stressed, overheated, or overwhelmed doesn't switch off when we walk into a building.

In our project with Knight Frank, biophilic design interventions resulted in an 18% increase in productivity, a 22% improvement in meetings, and a 28% boost in overall wellbeing.

Nature does a lot of heavy lifting. Even indoors.
